Tri-Card Poker
Tri-card poker, by the numbers...
Tri-Card poker is one of the oldest forms of poker, and a favorite of many
professional gamblers. Although it takes very little thought, it can be a
very fun and high action game. There are two different bets available, pair
plus is a bet which requires no skill. The player simply places the bet and
hopes that he is dealt a hand that qualifies for the payout, a pair or
better. This is completely independent of the dealer¡¯s hand. The pair plus
bet is where the most money is won. The ante/play bet is a more strategy
oriented play. In this the player must decide after seeing his three cards
whether or not his hand will beat the dealer¡¯s, if he feels it will he puts
out another bet equal to his original one, and if he doesn¡¯t he folds. This
raise bet is only paid out if the dealer¡¯s hand ¡°qualifies¡± which means
it contains queen high or greater. The ante bet only pays 1-1 so that is
what makes the pair plus such a crucial bet for someone looking to make big
money. The strategy involved in the ante wager can be removed quite easily.
Unlike blackjack where there are many factors involved in playing the
optimal strategy statistically, in tri-card poker all you have to remember
is Q-6-4. That is the cutoff hand for when to raise, and when to fold for
the ante wager. So you should raise with anything equal or greater to that,
which means a hand containing a card higher then a queen or, a hand with a
queen in it where the second card is equal or higher then a six. This system
is very easy to implement and can produce a razor thin house edge of 3.4%
which is less then blackjack, and most other games. There is also strategy
involved in the betting. The most obvious bet is one on both the pair plus,
and the ante, however this can be shifted. It is always wise to start with a
conservative ratio of either 1-1 or 1-2, where you bet one on pair plus and
two on the ante. As your session goes on, and you may be building up some
house money you can try to get aggressive and go 2-1 in the other direction.
Some people when running well like to go as high as 5-1 and hope for a big
hand, and a huge payout. And with a hand like three of a kind paying 30-1
it¡¯s easy to see how big money can be made.
Tri-card can require a slightly greater bankroll then some of the other
games, since there can be some extended periods were you don¡¯t hit a large
hand, and sine it can require three bets each hand. However if you don¡¯t
like having to crunch numbers and are just looking to have a good time, and
get in some table action tri-card is a great choice. Even if you are a
statistical wizard then you know that tri-card¡¯s low house edge makes it a
strong choice from that angle as well. With such a small learning curve
there is no reason why you shouldn¡¯t jump right in and start making some
big bucks at tri-card poker on
